Four or Five Men

The church in Alamito got started a short time after the Petits arrived in Guasave, Sinaloa. They were showing videos, the Jesus film, in different communities in the area . The Lord put it on Jeff's heart that He really wanted to plant a church in Alamito. So Jeff challenged the Lord to confirm that it was really what He wanted to do. He asked Him, "Lord if you want us to plant a church there, would you give us four or five men that would commit their lives to Jesus Christ as a sign that that is were you want us to plant a church."

Jeff told the people that next week they would not be showing a film. Next week they would do a Bible study about salvation. So if the people came, they should come for the Bible study. The next week, they went and didn’t show a film. They got together in a house that was near by to do a Bible study. They waited and weren't sure if anyone was going to show up, and waited and waited. The women and children who normally show up for the movies didn’t come. But a group of five men walked in through the door and sat down. They were told that there was going to be a Bible study that night. They said, "Yes, that’s why we have come". And so the Bible study was presented and all the points of salvation were covered in scripture. When the Bible study was finished an invitation was given to receive the Lord Jesus Christ. And they all said, "Yes!" All five of them prayed and received the Lord Jesus Christ. That confirmed with no doubt, no question, that that was where the Lord wanted His church to be planted. From that day the search began to look for a place to build that church.

Church Property

From the confirmation that was received at that Bible study, Jeff started looking for properties, locations to build a church in Alamito. Much difficulty was encountered because many people were against the idea of having a church there.  The people were very closed to letting others into their community.  They were afraid, concerned about what was going to be brought in, what was going to be done and they were afraid of all the change that they might see there. There had been many churches, or religions, that had tried to come in there and plant churches in the past.   They were all unsuccessful because they were run out by the people.  It posed quite a challenge as the people refused to let Jeff into the community.

Finally the man who owned the house where the Bible study was held became a good friend of Jeff's.  After a time he became so tired of, so disgusted with the closedness of his own people that one day he brought Jeff out to his own land that was on the outside edge of the community.  He told him that he owned that land and he said, "You select whatever size land that you would like and I will sell it to you and no one can say anything and no one can complain about it, you will just have that property".  So that’s what was done.  A piece of land on the edge of Alamito was purchased from him and construction began.

Construction

Over the next several months the church building was slowly constructed.  Small at first, it slowly expanded to meet the needs of the growing church body in Alamito.   Some work was done by the Petits.  Some work was hired out to provide jobs for a few of the local men.  And some work was done by visiting short-term mission groups as they served the body of Christ.

Todaythe main open air structure is covered with palm leaves and provides a relatively comfortable place for worship and teaching.  Additional construction continues as time and finances permit.
